ABOUT SENSEI ROY FLATT
Sensei Roy Flatt is a Goju-Ryu Karateka. He has trained in the martial arts for over 35 years and has been an instructor at his dojo, Childwall Karate Academy, for 30 years. He now teaches at his clubs 4 nights a week and trains daily.
Currently Sensei Roy is IOGKF 8th degree black belt. Along with English Chief Instructor Sensei Ernie Molyneux, Sensei Roy teaches karate at training weekends all across the continent of Europe.
In 2004 Sensei Roy was awarded the title of Shihan by his instructor Shihan Morio Higaonna, IOGKF Chief instructor. In our style of karate this is a rare instance of a Western martial arts teacher being given the honour of a Shihan title (meaning "Karate Master") who is not also the chief instructor of his country.

ABOUT GOJU-RYU KARATE TRAINING
The Goju-Ryu training method can be divided into four main categories: Kihon, Kata, Kumite & Hojo Undo. Each of these is further explained below.
In each category the individual is given instruction at the most basic level until the techniques become spontaneous. As the student advances technically, they progress physically and develop greater stamina. At the same time they learn increasingly intricate kata and more dynamic forms of kumite.
As the student approaches black belt level, technique, stamina, speed and co-ordination become natural as a result of intensive practice. It is at this stage that the serious students discover the wonderful world that karate has opened to them.
The object of true karate practice is the perfection of ones self through perfection of the art.

MAIN CATEGORIES OF GOJU-RYU TRAINING:
- Kihon ("basics"): the practice of blocks, punches, kicks and stances
- Kata ("form"): pre-arranged forms simulating combat situations
- Kumite ("sparring"): combat situations practiced with an opponent
- Hojo Undo ("supplementary training"): the use of weights and implements to increase strength and agility
